After spending a good 6 months in army, I have come to a conclusion that there are 3 types of fitness when you are serving your National Service and i shall attempt to explain them to you civilians now :D
Physical Fitness:
The type of fitness which is required to do your IPPT, in particular 2.4km runs. Everytime i take an IPPT, i tell myself that fatique is all in the mind and i only need to keep my legs moving to get a timing of 9.44 and below. However, it seems that that is hadly the case, no matter how hard i try, my legs seem to have a life of their own after a few rounds a round the track. And no matter how hard u try or how many times u try, the distance you can jump at the standing broad jump staion is limited by ur muscle capacity, thus i have come to a conclusion that only when ur physical fitness improves will u be able to concur IPPT with ease.
Combat Fitness:
This is the type of fitness required to run around with the freaking heavy fieldpacks, waterbags and weapons. The type of fitness required to endure the 23km march. Nothing much to it actually just that it requires a lot of mental strength cause combat fitness normally requires burst of energy and not endurance.
Civilian Fitness:
Lastly civilian fitness. My civilian fitness has definitely gone down since i entered army. When i once used to stay up still 4 just to watch tv, play computer or do homework. I now can barely keep my eyes open once the clock strikes 2230. ZZZZZzzz... Damn lights out timing. Because of the unappetising canteen food, my appetite has shrunk by a lot and i no longer find buffets worthwhile due to my inability to comsume large amounts of food at one go. NOooo!! losing one of the greatest joys of life (or at least my life, haha)
I forsee tough times ahead adapting back to the civilian life and regaining my civilian (and match fitness) haha..
